We were approached by a project manager for a very well known celebrity that has a very remote property that was being developed as a summer retreat. The only problem was that the site had no power supplies, gas or electricity. Getting Kerosene for a generator to site was difficult, and what is more, not very environmentally friendly. We were asked to come up with a solution.

Taking into consideration the site and the amount of power required we undertook a feasibility study, in particular, knowing the location we explored the wind speed which we knew would be good. Very good. The other option being solar photovoltaic’s, where could we put them, and stop them being blown away!

The proposed solution was for a 2.1Kwp solar array, using Sanyo 210w Panels, and fixed to robust galvanised steel framing system, and a 2.5kw Proven Energy wind turbine. There was also a back up generated left in place in the event of a non windy night! Although being an off-grid system there are specialist batteries being constantly powered for such an occurrence. Which isn’t often at this location.

Getting the equipment, and all the tools required to site was a challenge, but over a few days in June we managed to install and integrate the solar array and the wind turbine, along with the batteries and back up generator.

The client has been delighted with the system, and so far has not once had the generator kick in. And this is during the period when the property received the greatest use and number of visitors. As we are now heading into the more windy seasons we don’t expect that to change.
